About Us

The Mission of the “God and Country” Concert

The God and Country Concert series was established in 1986 to foster friendship, cooperation, and musical fellowship between musicians of The Salvation Army and musicians of the greater Columbus area, specifically the Brass Band of Columbus. In addition, the purpose of this event is;

  • To honor God and country through music
  • To recognize outstanding contributions to music and through music
  • To assist youth with their musical development

History

Annually, the event is organized through the efforts of the God and Country Committee – a volunteer group comprised of community leaders, musicians, and individuals from the Salvation Army.  The event is financially supported through fundraising efforts of the God and Country Committee and receives administrative assistance from The Salvation Army Columbus.  All funds received through the efforts of the God and Country Committee have been earmarked specifically for the God and Country Concert event.  The God and Country Concert, as an official event of the Salvation Army in Central Ohio, qualifies for tax-deductible charitable donation status.

The Annual God and Country Music Award

In 1988, the God and Country Committee began what has become an annual initiative to present the God and Country Award to those who have made a profound contribution to the God and Country Concert or its mission.  The first award was presented in 1989.

The Brigadier Arthur B. Hill Music Scholarship

In 2001, God and Country Concert co-founder Brigadier Arthur B. Hill passed away.  Following his death,  the Hill Family founded The Arthur B. Hill Music Scholarship to present an annual scholarship to young musicians with the first award in 2002.   The scholarship now honors the memory of both Brigadiers Arthur B. and Doris J. (Fowle) Hill.
