St Magnus Kenneth Downie

The title of this year’s NABBA Championship Section test piece, ‘St. Magnus’ does not refer to the patron saint of the Orkneys (d. 1115) but rather to a hymn tune named after him, a short, 8-bar hymn tune attributed to Jeremiah Clarke. After presenting the tune twice, Downie offers the listener four, extended and contrasting variations followed by a stunning Finale that requires the full technical resources of the brass band, including 27 different percussion instruments.
