Dr. Ronald W. Holz is Director of the SASF Brass Band of Asbury University as an extracurricular activity. He is currently Professor of Music Literature and Instrumental Music at Asbury University, is a noted music historian, author, conductor, lecturer, and clinician, particularly in the of field instrumental music. His guest appearances have taken him throughout the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Scandinavia. He is considered one of the world’s leading authorities on the literature, culture, and history of the British-style brass band.
Dr. Holz is the conductor of the Asbury University Orchestra, instructor of trumpet, composition and coordinator/coach of the Instrumental Chamber Ensembles of the Collegium Musicum.
Dr. Holz completed his graduate training in historical musicology at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (M.Mus.) and the University of Connecticut (Ph.D.). At Asbury University he served as Chairman of the Division of Fine Arts from 1985 to 1991, having joined the faculty in 1981. Dr. Holz has helds positions on the boards of such musical organizations as the North American Brass Band Association and serves as a member of the Editorial Review Committee of the International Trumpet Guild. His publications include several critically acclaimed books:
- Brass Bands of The Salvation Army: Their Mission and Music, Volumes 1 and 2
- The Proclaimers: A History of the New York Staff Band, 1887–2007
- Erik Leidzén: Band Arranger and Composer
In addition to leading the Salvation Army Student Fellowship Brass Band of Asbury University and Asbury University ensembles as noted, he has also led the internationally famed Lexington Brass Band and brought them to international prominence in a very short period of time. The Lexington Brass Band has given invitational concerts at such events as The Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, The International Trumpet Guild annual conference, and the All England Masters Brass Band Championships, Cambridge, England.

We would like to acknowledge Dr. Ronald Holz as a co-founder of the God and Country Concert, and in perusing this event’s history in the front of this program, his devotion and influence are obvious along with numerous performances by his ensembles over the years.
We also want to recognize the special significance of this weekend as Dr. Holz celebrates his Asbury University retirement. Last night he was honored by a special retirement Gala Concert with the return of many Asbury Alumni to recognize their former teacher and mentor. All those musicians join us today to including our extraordinary guest soloist: Mark Ridenour.
